Have you recently moved to Manchester or have you been here for some time but still uncertain about where to explore? (Don't stress, I felt like this for a few years) We're here to assist you! At Sour Cherry, both our office and main store are located in the vibrant Northern Quarter, so I wanted to let you know my favourite spots!
The Northern Quarter reminds me of a rainy day (like most of Manchester) So this is what I like to do when I want to spend a day out in the Northern Quarter.
Coffee, Coffee, Coffee! Whether you prefer to settle into a cosy corner and immerse yourself in the ambience of a café or take a stroll while savouring your drink, a hot beverage is ideal on a dreary day in Manchester. The Northern Quarter is known for its selection of great coffee shops, and while there are some great cafes in the Northern Quarter to choose from, one that stands out is Siop Shop.
Siop Shop not only serves great coffee but also has tasty, creative doughnuts and pastries if you’re in the mood for a sweet treat. Now that’s autumn, I’m channelling my inner Lorelai Gilmore, my go-to order is an Oat Milk Latte (although I’m not sure that would be her drink of choice). Siop Shop is the perfect little pick-me-up to start your day.
Afflecks is located in the heart of the Northern Quarter. It’s an iconic building and a vibrant hub for alternative shops and small businesses. Known for its distinctive character, Afflecks is a must-visit, for both locals and people visiting Manchester.
While we may be slightly biased, given that our store is located within Afflecks, we can confidently say Afflecks is home to an impressive array of small businesses that embody the spirit of the Northern Quarter.
On the second floor, you'll find our fantastic neighbours like Swalk Creative, a collective of independent, talented artists. A few steps away are Beg, Steal or Borrow, a thrift shop that offers a treasure trove of vintage clothing and quirky finds.
For dog lovers, Noff & Nana, For dog lovers, Noff & Nana specialises in high-quality dog treats and accessories, catering to both pups and their dog-obsessed owners. It's the perfect place to pick up something for your furry friend or to find a unique gift for a fellow dog enthusiast.
After navigating Afflecks, you might want a break. Third Floor Rising is the perfect spot for a drink and a quick bite. They’re a favourite among Affleck’s staff. Everyone who works in our Afflecks store raves about their delicious iced coffee.
Affleck’s is a celebration of creativity and community, it’s always worth a visit whether you're a long-time Mancunian or a first-time visitor.
Whether you’re a dedicated plant enthusiast or simply someone looking to add a touch of greenery to your space (like me!), Nice Things, conveniently located opposite Afflecks on Church Street, offers a diverse selection of plants that cater to everyone’s needs.
At Nice Things, you’ll find a variety of plants at affordable prices. For those more experienced in plant care, the shop features a stunning array of exotic plants that are perfect for plant parents! Whether you’re looking for low-maintenance options or unique specimens to showcase, Nice Things has something for everyone. The staff at Nice Things are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable; their passion for plants is evident.
Female-owned, delicious food, and decorated pink? Nibble ticks all of our boxes! Nestled on Oldham Street, Nibble is the perfect spot for lunch or a coffee break. However, as they're in a small spot, their tables fill up quick! but it’s worth a wait.
At Nibble, the focus is not only on creating tasty dishes, but they also specialise in sustainability and ensuring their menu caters to a variety of dietary requirements. I still dream about a pumpkin toastie I had at Nibble last autumn; it was divine. If you fancy something sweet, Nibble also has some tasty cakes and desserts. They’ll leave you wanting to come back for more.
Whether you’re in the mood to treat yourself or searching for a unique gift for someone special, Fred Aldous is the ultimate destination for all your arts and crafts needs.
Located in Steveson’s Square, at Fred Aldous, you’ll find an impressive selection of art supplies and accessories. With such a range of products, they also stock the perfect gift ideas you wouldn't have ever dreamed of.
What they sell:
If you find yourself in the Northern Quarter, Fred Aldous is an ideal spot for browsing. If you're eager to get ahead, It’s also the perfect place to start planning your Christmas list.
We could've listed hundreds of things you could do in the Northern Quarter, I've lived in Manchester for 4 years and I'm still finding things to do and places to visit.
